A national mechanical and specialty contracting company with operations across the Sunbelt and Western U.S. is seeking a hands-on Regional Controller based in Phoenix. The organization has grown through acquisition and is actively integrating multiple operating companies onto common processes and systems. This is a direct-hire role for someone who can take full ownership of accounting across a group of locations, lead a small team through change, and bring order to evolving systems.
The role reports to the Director of Accounting and manages one to two accounting staff across two to four locations. Regional scope may be Arizona-based or expand to multiple states, depending on the selected candidate's experience and fit.
What You'll Own
- Lead the full month-end close for your assigned locations: reconciliations, journal entry review, accruals, and timely, accurate financial reporting
- Own the WIP process from start to finish, including the conversation between accounting and operations on open questions and final completion. You will not do all the work yourself, but you will own the outcome and either train or partner with your senior accountant to get there
- Command WIP/CIP schedules with fluency in BIE (Billings in Excess) and CIE (Costs in Excess). This is central to the role, not a secondary function
- Lead the cleanup effort across newly acquired and integrated entities: reconcile accounts going back six or more months, correct prior-period errors, and bring the books current. Comfortably owning a backlog and methodically working it down is essential
- Partner with operations and project management on revenue recognition, percentage-of-completion accounting, job costing, and change orders
- Develop and refine the senior accountants on your team. They are capable and need a leader who can sharpen their technical skills and help them see the bigger picture
- Strengthen accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls as the organization matures
What Makes Someone Successful Here
- Construction or trades industry background. HVAC, plumbing, mechanical contracting, or similar project-based work translates best
- A mindset that accounting is accounting. The systems are not perfect and will take time to refine. We need someone who asks how do I get accurate numbers in the most efficient way possible right now, rather than waiting for a perfect system
- Comfort operating in a private equity-backed environment where change and pressure are constant
- Adaptability across accounting platforms. The group runs Sage Intacct, QuickBooks, MAS 90, and other systems, depending on how each company came in. Sage Intacct experience helps but is not required. The ability to learn any system quickly matters more than expertise in one
- 6+ years of progressive accounting experience, including controller or assistant Controller level responsibility
- Hands-on WIP/CIP and BIE/CIE experience. Candidates without construction accounting exposure will not be considered
- Proven ability to lead and develop accounting staff
- Track record of working through reconciliation backlog and bringing books current in a fast-moving environment
- Multi-entity or multi-location experience strongly preferred
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance is required.
- CPA preferred but not required
- Strong communicator who can hold the line between accounting and operations.
- Schedule: In office Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Remote: Monday and Friday
- Competitive compensation based on experience and level, with opportunities for performance incentives.
- Comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, and vision coverage, plus HSA options with employer contributions in select plans, and company-paid basic life and accidental death & dismemberment insurance.
- Paid time off, holiday pay, and a 401(k) retirement savings plan to support your long-term financial well-being.
- Professional development through hands-on training, mentorship, apprenticeships, certifications, and clear career advancement paths across our nationwide operating companies.
